Artelia is celebrating its 5th birthday! On this occasion, we would like to present a project that has symbolic value for our group: the new university hospital in Nantes. With more than 500 million euros being invested in the project, it is a real challenge for Artelia, and for the architects and landscape designers (Art & BUILD, PARGADE and SIGNES PAYSAGE) with whom we will be working. More than just building a new 1500-bed hospital, it involves designing a complete healthcare district, including research, training and academic facilities. And it is precisely in such highly complex projects that the Artelia group is able to deploy the full range of its multidisciplinary expertise, from urban engineering to water management and from sustainable buildings to “digital engineering”, which is fundamentally important in designing this hospital complex for the 21st century.

As the COP 21 opens in Paris, we would also like you to (re)discover the many facets of Artelia’s involvement with regard to the climate via a number of assignments throughout the world… and the group’s latest successes on the five continents.

I hope you will all enjoy reading this issue!

  New Contracts

Main port of Corsica in Bastia, a major project for Artelia
Artelia Eau & Environnement has been assisting with development of the new port of Bastia for many years. The group has now also been appointed to perform more detailed navigation studies for the new port, to be conducted with a simulator, and to check the stability of the structures. In parallel, Artelia is also responsible for designing the new port approach road and performing the associated impact assessments. This is hence a strategic project for the group, calling on its skills in both the maritime and transport fields. It is also a linchpin in the future development of the port of Bastia, making it the largest port in Corsica, and, along with the airport, the main gateway to the island for trade and tourism.
COP 21 | Artelia awarded the contract to assist with fire safety matters throughout the Conference

PCSI, an Artelia subsidiary, has been appointed to provide complete fire safety assistance services while the COP21 site facilities (stands with a total area of 80,000 m2) are being constructed and inspected and while they are open to the public. The conference will take place at Le Bourget (north-eastern suburbs of Paris) from 30 November to 13 December 2015. Three people will be assigned permanently to the site during this operation.

Artelia wins the competitive bid to redesign and supervise water supply works in Palaiseau

Artelia Ville & Transport has just won a competitive bid to design and supervise construction of a new pumping station and water tower in Palaiseau (southern suburbs of Paris), for which its Urban Water Department will collaborate with Les Ateliers d’architecture Monique Labbé. Drawing on its Building Information Modelling (BIM) expertise, Artelia used a digital mock-up to perform the technical aspects of the design outline for the entire site, and will do likewise for all the design studies. The Palaiseau project site, owned by the Paris region water authority (SEDIF), features a booster pumping station delivering drinking water and two water towers with a total capacity of 6000 m³. Given the obsolescence of the existing structures and the modifications that would be needed to increase their capacity and safeguard the water distribution system, SEDIF opted to construct a new reservoir and pumping station. Success | Artelia wins a contract to design the rehabilitation and construction of wastewater treatment facilities in Ulan Bator
Artelia's first contract in Mongolia is a fine accomplishment, since it concerns an ambitious project involving numerous constraints, not least those relating to the extremely harsh climate. Artelia's assignment will be to propose measures for rehabilitating the existing treatment plant and to design a new central plant for the city of Ulan Bator with a capacity of 250,000 m3/d (equivalent population of 1.6 million).
Andina | New contract for Artelia Brasil in the food industry sector
Last spring Artelia began participating in the construction of a new factory that will produce sodas, fruit juices and sparkling water in the city of Duque de Caxias, Brazil, on behalf of Embotelladora Andina, the company that has been making, distributing and marketing Coca-Cola products in Chile and Argentina for the past 20 years. This project is perfectly in line with our Brazilian subsidiary's strategy of pursuing growth in the food industry and life science sectors. Over a period of 20 months, in partnership with Pharmako, Artelia will provide engineering designs, assistance with contract award, and construction supervision services. This project is based on the concept of a mini-factory and is set to be rolled out in two phases, the first being slated for commissioning in 2016 and the second in 2025.
Climate change adaptation: Artelia is committed to assisting the ports of Morocco

In August this year the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) appointed Artelia to perform a consultancy assignment with the general aim of helping the Moroccan port sector adapt to climate change by implementing a detailed programme of viable physical investments and associated technical cooperation activities in order to build the capacity of the national ports agency and promote the transfer of know-how.

Philippines | Artelia involved in building one of the biggest flood control schemes in the world

Artelia was appointed last July by Hyundai E & C and Samsung C & T to provide design and construction supervision services for the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike in the Philippines, which is set to become one of the longest flood control schemes in the world. For this contract, which takes the form of a Public-Private Partnership, Artelia will work in a joint venture with Systra. The project involves constructing a 47 kilometre-long flood control dike carrying a six-lane highway, and reclaiming approx. 700 hectares of land for real-estate development. The aim of the scheme is to mitigate the impacts of floods, facilitate passenger and goods transportation, and create a new area of land for commercial and residential use.

Artelia participated in INTERCOH 2015

The Artelia group's R&D expertise in the field of hydrosedimentary modelling was cited once again at this international event, particularly in regard to studies of the fate of offshore sediment dumping sites and the medium-term morphodynamic modelling of estuaries, which formed the subject of two plenary presentations (on the rivers Loire and Seine). INTERCOH is held every two years and brings together the top hydrosedimentary experts specialising in cohesive sediment (mud). During this 13th edition, scientists of 20 different nationalities described their advances in the measuring and modelling of such materials.
