Royal college of Surgeons

A state-of-the-art training centre for UK surgeons and dentists

The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) opened its new headquarters in London on 12 July 2021. Artelia contributed to the transformation of this prestigious surgical teaching and research centre, which was rebuilt in 1945.

Behind the carefully preserved historic façade, a new seven-storey building (BREEAM Excellent) will provide classrooms, meeting rooms, a library, a museum and social areas in a modern, high-quality environment.

CONTEXT & ISSUES

Following a detailed assessment of refurbishment options, the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) decided to redevelop its historic headquarters at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London. For five years, Artelia was involved in managing this £80 million transformation in close collaboration with the RCS and Lendlease Consulting, the owner’s engineer. The project resulted in the creation of a modern, sustainable, high-end complex of offices, teaching and research facilities.

A new seven-storey extension, including a double basement level, was built behind the Grade II* listed façade of the Barry building. The result of the refurbishment is spectacular, harmoniously blending historic architecture with modern, state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly design.

The project includes a new professional surgical centre, with facilities for courses and examinations. It also houses the Lumley Library, contemporary meeting rooms, members’ areas, facilities for surgical specialty associations, office areas, the Huntarian Museum, as well as a new public entrance and café.
