Simon-Valois Meeting Zone

A new development combining innovative urban design and pleasant neighborhood life

The new development of Montreal’s Simon-Valois Meeting Zone was realized through a design competition.

It is the result of collaboration between our multidisciplinary teams and our development partner Civiliti.

This innovative urban design involves a complete change in traffic patterns, with the aim of creating a meeting zone for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, all in one place without strict demarcation of spaces dedicated to each.

In addition, relaxation areas were created to bring a pleasant neighborhood life to the area, and scenic lighting was added to create a small “festival square” in Montreal’s east end.

CONTEXT & ISSUES

Our project team was commissioned by the city to draw up the plans and specifications, supervise the works and coordinate the various parties involved, with a view to creating an integrated project.

Our partners Civiliti were responsible for the landscape architecture and lighting architecture concepts on which the lighting of the area was based. Numerous design and coordination challenges were met, starting with a concept that would ensure safe movement for all users, especially the most vulnerable. Thus, rigorous planning of the geometric layout and traffic management was a central issue in this mandate.

The redevelopment of the Simon-Valois Meeting Zone has enabled local residents and businesses to reclaim public space. By redesigning the road geometry, rebuilding underground infrastructures, adding tree pits and integrating a stage for public events, this metamorphosis today offers a privileged place for meetings and neighborhood life accessible to all, by promoting public spaces, active transportation and a greener, more inclusive environment.
